It’s almost time to hit the books, kids. Back to school season is fast approaching. Of course, not all fields of study pay off the same on the job market. New research shows which disciplines are most likely to lead to some of the more lucrative career paths.

The team at University Magazine has compiled a shortlist of the degrees that offer the biggest bang for your buck right now. Disciplines are ranked according to their highest average salaries based on income data from Statistics Canada.

10. Civil Engineering – Average salary $80,080

9. Nursing – $84,510

8. Specialized Engineering – $85,009

7. Business Administration – $85,508

6. Software Engineering – $90,000

5. Geosciences – $100,000

4. Pharmacology – $102,398

3. Finance – $103,376

2. Petroleum or Chemical Engineering – $104.000

1. Business / Management Sciences (MS) – $110,000 – $115,000

The top degree, Management Sciences is an interdisciplinary study of problem solving and decision making in organizations. It uses a combination of analytical models, data science, and behavioural sciences to find solutions for the most complex problems in business.

The top ten degrees are all in the STEM fields, science, technology, engineering, and math. However, if you’re studying philosophy or languages, these are the most likely career paths for you.

According to Statistics Canada, Canada’s highest paid workers all studied one of three things in school.
