Sending a thank-you note to an employer is a smart move. For one thing, it is just good manners to thank someone for taking the time to meet with you and consider your credentials for the job. For another, it shows a level of professionalism that can set you apart from any other candidates who don’t send one.

But how do you write one? What do you say?

It’s actually quite easy. You don’t need to say very much at all. You can write a sharp, memorable job interview follow-up email in just four sentences. Here they are:

1. The thank you

Launch right into it. You are emailing the employer to thank them for meeting with you, so thank them right off the bat.

Thank you for taking the time on Monday to meet with me and discuss my candidacy for the Marketing Manager position at ABC Co.

2. Reiterate your desire for the job

Employers prefer enthusiastic candidates. Hopefully, you demonstrated your interest at the interview, but restate it now – with new insights learned from the actual meeting.

I was already passionate about the potential of contributing to your brand’s growth, but having met with the team, I am more convinced than ever that I would be a great fit.

3. Remind them of your key selling points

The employer has already read your resume and met with you in an interview, so you have had several opportunities to sell your candidacy. Hopefully, they are already impressed with your work history and potential for contributing to their team. So, you don’t need to rehash your entire list of credentials in the thank you note. Just remind them of your biggest selling points for context.

I have led the content and social marketing initiatives of DCE Co. for the past two years and the skills and insights I have learned in that position will allow me to successfully drive your company’s brand awareness.

4. Conclusion

You’ve thanked the employer, expressed your desire for the job, and pointed out why you’re a great fit, now finish off by offering them any further information they might need.

Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions for me or if there is any other information I can provide you about my past work and accomplishments.

Then politely sign off.

Put those sentences together and it looks like this:

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for taking the time on Monday to meet with me and discuss my candidacy for the Marketing Manager position at ABC Co.

I was already passionate about the potential of contributing to your brand’s growth, but having met with the team, I am more convinced than ever that I would be a great fit for this role.

I have led the content and social marketing initiatives of DCE Co. for the past two years and the skills and insights I have learned in that position will allow me to successfully increase your company’s brand awareness.

Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions for me or if there is any other information I can provide you about my past work and accomplishments.

Thanks again for your interest!

Best regards,

Peter

Of course, if there were any questions left unanswered at the interview, or you forgot to mention some things that could be relevant, you can always use your follow-up email to address them. However, these four sentences can serve as a basic template for a short, professional job interview thank you email.

Now, when should you send your thank you email and how often? This article tells you exactly what you need to do.
